FUE Hair Transplant Online Consultation

Doctor:
Hi. I'm
wondering if you can help me out fixing my hair transplant.
An
online consultation would be great.
I had it done on my front hairline by a doctor in Canada in
the summer
of 1994. This was before they used lasers for these things,
so the
transplant doesn't look natural. Also, the procedure seemed
to cause me
numbness in my scalp. So I didn't want to get any more
procedures to
fill out the hairline. Also, I don't want any more scars on
the side of
my head. This already looks bad when I cut my hair short.
(as you can tell from the pictures).
Recently I went back to the doctor who did the procedure to
ask what
could be done and his main suggestion was to have more
transplants. I've
got fairly light hair and skin, which is good for this
apparently. But I
don't want any more transplants.
A doctor I have seen for laser treatment on scars mentioned
that I
could come in and he would try to zap the hair. But he
doesn't have
experience with hair removal, so I'm a bit nervous. Also, we
don't know
what would be left if the hair were zapped. There might be
just a big
hole left, which would be even worse than the hair
transplant. And
another doctor noted that there is "pitting" where the
transplants are,
which isn't good.
I'm wondering if you might have any suggestions on what I
could do
here. I'm attached some pictures I've taken to give you a
rough idea of
the situation. I know it's not a great way to judge, but
maybe you'll
have some thoughts.
I live in Canada.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
Silhcar

Dear Silhcar,
When we see a case like yours numerous options spring to mind. None of them perfect, mind you. But many of them have benefited different people in your situation.
I will list them for you:
1)Laser hair removal / electrolysis – I personally consider this the least desirable option. The reason being that the plug grafts transplanted in your case always leave a visible scar & varying amount of pitting / cobblestoning. If you try to laser / electrolyze the hair roots, you will probably end with the residual scars.
Moreover, lasers / electrolysis is not very successful in such cases as often the hair roots may be distorted and, thus, not amenable to destruction.
To get an idea of what it may look like after lasering out the hair roots (if it is successful) you just have to shave off the area where your transplant is.
2)Graft excision & primary closure: This has a better chance of success and is more aesthetically pleasing. The grafts are then taken out with a punch and the resultant hole can be stitched close. It leads to a very fine scar. But not all the hair of each plug graft may be removed. Some may remain.
People usually feel comfortable with the final out come though. As most of the troublesome scar tissue is removed and no extensive post op care is required It’s the fastest way out.
The hair roots taken out thus can be grafted individually back to your scalp, if you so desire.
3)If you find the above 2 options not fulfilling all your requirements, you can chose to go in for camouflaging the plug grafts by grafting hair in between them. An example of such a case is
Since, the
grafts will be harvested by FUSE / fue you will not have the problem of visible scarring. You could also use the option of having body hair grafted in between the plug grafts.
FUSE/fue grafts= US$3.5/-per graft
FUHT=$1 per graft.
I know you are not interested in hair grafting but I listed the 3rd option just to list all the possibilities available to you.
