Doctor:

I am 43 years old. My goal is to fill in the crown areas. I do not need any work done on the front.  I would greatly appreciate it if you could answer the following questions:

1) Based on the photos, approximately how many FUE grafts will I need to fill in the crown?

2) I will be traveling to your clinic. Can everything be done in one session? Basically I need to know how long do I need to schedule my trip for? 3 days, 1 week ?

3) Do you think if I need to worry about permanent shock fallout as a result of the procedure?

4) Approximately how much would this cost me ?

5) Do you need to shave both my donor site and the recipient site for the procedure?

6) How long will it take before I can go out in public without looking odd as a result of the transplant?

Thank you for your time.

Dr. Cole's Comments

I always tell patients that restoration of the crown requires two to three times as much work as the front. this is due to the multiple and ever changing hair directions in the crown area. Thus, you will require between two to three sessions of 1000 to 1500 grafts to your crown. I suspect that a total of 2000 to 3000 grafts will be adequate. Of course your blonde hair will help to reduce the number of grafts so keep your fingers crossed.

Your hair appears finer and this may require more work than if the hair were coarse. You do not have enough hair in the crown to worry too much about significant or permanent shock loss. Only the perimeter would be at risk. I would schedule for 2 to 3 days. We try to do about 500 grafts on a patient in one day. This is what we have found to be most comfortable to our patients and our staff.

If you do more than 800 grafts we recommend shaving the donor area. we can do up to 1200 grafts without shaving in some patients. We tend to charge more when we do not shave. We do not find it necessary to shave the recipient area in most instances. We charge 8.00 per graft for FIT.

Work in the back of the head can be concealed quite easily. If you do not shave the donor area, you can go out the next day. If you shave the donor area, expect 4 to 7 days to be adequate. Scabbing and crusting on the top falls off generally by the 7th day (4 days in some). You can soak to moisten the grafts and then gently lift the scabs off the grafts with a fine tooth comb after the 4th day if you like. The pinkness in the recipient area can be concealed with make up after the 10th day if you like.
