Hi Doctor:

I post as AMS99 in HairSite. I'm 25 and have been thinning at the crown for the past four or five years.

I've been on proscar 1.25mg and 2x minox for the past two years, and that has seemed to slow down but not stop the thinning on the crown.  I have mpb in the family, but although my 29 year old brother has some signs of a little diffused thinning and temple loss, his hairloss is only noticeable to those actually looking for signs of mpb and he has a perfectly dense and thick crown.  My father also had a nice thick full head of hair up until his 40s.  At 61 he has diffused thinning all over the top, but it looks very natural for his age and he still has a hairline, although it's receded.

As you can see in the photos, I have plenty of chest hairs. They actually grown over 2 inches long normally, but I usually trim my chest down to an inch long.  If you need anymore info, feel free to ask.

My Goals

Hairline - I am happy with my hairline and front right now so I do not need any work there.

Crown - I have diffused thinning all over, but for the most part it's fairly thick in the front and very thin in the crown area. I contacted another clinic saying I wanted to get crown work done, and even was willing to use my body hair for the procedure, and they replied saying I did not need work at the moment. Am I going to get this reply from every doctor??? I REALLY would like to see a nice thick crown on my head once again to match the rest of my hair. is this ever going to be possible, or am I at a loss?

Questions

1. Will you be able to fix my crown and make it thick again?

2. Approximately how many grafts will I need to make the crown thick like the rest of my hair ?

3. Will shock fallout be a risk for my case ?

4. Can I get my crown fixed in 1 session ?

5. Do you recommend I use body hair instead of scalp hair as donor to fix the crown?  I prefer to use my SCALP hair as donor but I will not oppose to mixing body and scalp hair if necessary.

6. Any reasons why I should not consider getting a hair transplant to fix my crown ?

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you
AMS99

Dr. Jones' Comments

AMS99,

It is a huge mistake in my opinion to operate on the crown of a 25 year old. Future hair loss is unknown and in 10 or 15 years you will regret you have had the procedure done. Hair loss is a progressive problem. I suggest you stick to the propecia, or maybe try Avodart and forget the transplant for the time being,
